In the fourteenth edition of Research To Read, let’s read some research papers related to Cardiology, the branch of medicine focused on the heart and the associated circulatory system of the human body.
What is the R2R newsletter all about?
To recap, this newsletter is my 2025 resolution in action: to make reading medical research a consistent habit. Just like any muscle that needs regular exercise, the only way to strengthen this practice is by doing it repeatedly.
That’s the motivation behind Research to Read. It's a way for me to share the research I’m diving into, while also expanding my own knowledge. And I’m inviting my fellow medicos to join me on this journey. We all stand to benefit from staying informed and sharpening our understanding of the latest studies in our field.
So, let’s get into the research together!

Check out two interesting articles about the curiosities of cardiology beyond just the clinical aspect of it.
The first article, The Cardiovascular Secrets of Giraffes, explores the currently known research on how giraffes manage to maintain cardiovascular health despite their height without developing HTN, positional changes in BP, heart failure or preeclampsia. Though these insights have not led to any innovations in human clinical therapy, studying these adaptations might provide unique perspectives which could lead to some breakthroughs in the future, who knows?
The second article I read, Sounding the Alarm: How Noise Hurts the Heart, highlights growing evidence that links transportation noise (road traffic, trains, airplanes etc.) and declining cardiac health and increasing mortality caused by the same. This goes to show how health can be impacted not just because of risk factors based on the patient, but also the surrounding factors beyond their immediate control.

Targeting the brain to protect the heart
This paper discusses the study of Gava et al., which addresses the mechanism behind the attenuation of cardiac dysfunction by the administration of intracerebroventricular (ICV) leptin.
Expanding on mechanisms such as the association with increased cardiac glucose and fatty acid oxidative metabolism, a decrease in body weight during the treatment course, causing secondary benefits and improved cardiomyocyte calcium coupling, this commentary makes a case to better understand the effects and workings of ICV leptin therapy.

Understanding Group-A Streptococcal Pharyngitis and Skin Infections As Causes For Rheumatic Fever: Protocol For A Prospective Disease Incidence Study
This paper outlines a study protocol to assess the true incidence of GAS pharyngitis and GAS skin infections, serological responses and effectiveness of antibiotics through a prospective disease incidence study and an associated case-control study to improve clinical management and design more effective ARF prevention programs.
This study, based in New Zealand, also highlights the importance of establishing ULN (*) values for different at-risk populations for streptococcal serology to account for the epidemiological differences.

Comparison of an Initial Risk-based testing strategy Vs. Usual Testing In Stable Symptomatic Patients with Suspected Coronary Artery Disease
This talks about the PRECISE study (Prospective Randomised Trial of the Optimal Evaluation of Cardiac Symptoms and Revascularisation) where RCT (*) was done over 12 months to assess testing strategies for suspected CAD (*). This study was done to address research gaps and concerns from previous similar studies.
